Lucca Biennale Cartasia

Every edition, the Biennale chooses a contemporary theme as a common thread of all its activities, events and exhibitions. Paper artists, performers, designers and architects are invited to reflect on the theme with the aim of creating a bridge between art and society.

THE WHITE PAGE

What does a white page represent?
Endless possibilities. A different future, a dream that can come true, an ambition, a different perspective, an alternative to daily routine. A blank page gives us the feeling of being able to sketch out a new, different, better world.
At the same time, a white piece of paper can represent the anxiety of it all, the negative possibilities, the unexpected implications and a leap in the dark. An inability to act.

It is a bridge between the past and the future, it is an opportunity for free writing or the anguish of the unknown, it is the courage of making a choice or the loss of one’s comfort zone.

THEMES OF PREVIOUS EDITIONS

THEMES OF PREVIOUS EDITIONS

Since 2018, Lucca Biennale Cartasia has created a section that is fully devoted to a foreign country with the aim of establishing institutional, cultural and economic relationships with the guest nation. At the same time, collaboration with that country guides the creation of the new artworks and fosters the establishment of cultural exchanges.

Lucca Biennale Cartasia cares deeply about the environment and territory and has always promoted paper and cardboard recycling through the reuse of materials. Meetings and roundtables with industry professionals together with workshops for children are aimed at raising awareness on this topic.
In 2022, sustainability will be the driving force of the event.

Some of our initiatives:

BE GREEN, BE PAPER!

Everyone can help; even small actions count. LUBICA will produce coasters and placemats made of plantable paper and distribute them throughout all the venues interested in joining the BE GREEN, BE PAPER! campaign. Small actions for a big change.
