Paper, My World
My name is Paola, and for almost thirty years, I have been working in artistic bookbinding. I was born in 1968 in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in Grado, and I attended the Istituto Statale d’Arte di Gorizia, where I earned a diploma in Architecture and Furniture Design.
I worked as an interior designer for several years until I discovered the world of bookbinding and fell in love with it at first sight. I left my permanent job and joined my mother-in-law in her workshop, learning the secrets of the craft, and eventually taking over the business in 1998.
Working with paper in a technological world is a challenge, a pleasant way of going against the tide, creating objects for sale and then using the scraps to make exhibition pieces.
I love collaborating with other artisans, intertwining our work in an alternative way, using paper for artistic works, or using unique materials for my bindings. Paper has always been with me throughout my growth, first for designing (I belong to a generation that still drew on paper), and then in my bookbinding work.
My previous experience in design has undoubtedly influenced my current work, in the colors and lines I create. I love talking to young people and encouraging them to follow their hearts in their career choices, to believe in themselves, and to unleash their inner passion.
The here and now is crucial; it is now that we must commit, bring out our ideas, and develop more sustainable ways so that tomorrow we can be here to share our stories. I am constantly working on projects, but often the best things come from unplanned, casual encounters that end up being very satisfying.
For instance, this year I was involved with a major local interior design company (Moroso Spa), creating 300 notebooks for them for the Fuori Salone in Milan. For the covers, I used "scrap" pieces of leather obtained from their sofa cuts, creating a very interesting upcycling project.
