The Sustainable Art of Paper Fashion
We are Angelita Pagliaro and Morena Illica Magrini, two friends and artists with a shared passion for sustainable fashion and textile art. We come from Pescara, a place that has always valued art and creativity. From a young age, we immersed ourselves in the world of fashion, studying and experimenting with various materials and techniques. However, it was paper that offered us an unexpected and fascinating medium to express our creativity.
In the fast-paced world we live in, rediscovering the importance of the "Here and Now" can profoundly transform our life experience. Being present means dedicating ourselves completely to what we are doing in the moment, without being distracted by the past or the future. When we are truly present, every moment becomes richer and more meaningful. Art is the tool that connects us to the dimension of here and now. Today more than ever, sustainability is a central theme in the world of fashion. Our society is becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of textile production, and we believe that art can play a fundamental role in promoting more eco-friendly practices. By using paper, we want to demonstrate that it is possible to create high-quality and beautiful fashion without compromising our planet.
Creating art in the contemporary world means navigating between innovation and responsibility. Our creations are an attempt to merge these two aspects, using sustainable materials to create something new and surprising. Paper, often considered an ephemeral material, becomes in our hands a lasting and significant medium, capable of telling stories and evoking emotions.
Our approach to paper happened almost by chance. Initially, we worked with recycled fabrics and eco-friendly materials, but one day, during a visit to an art exhibition, we were fascinated by a paper artwork. From there, we started experimenting with various types of paper, soon discovering its incredible potential. Paper offers us a unique sensitivity, allowing us to create textures and shapes that would be impossible with other materials. Looking to the future, we have several exciting projects in mind. We are working on a new collection that combines recycled paper from old books and newspapers, giving new life to historical materials. Additionally, we want to expand our educational work through workshops and seminars, teaching other artists and designers how to use paper in a sustainable and creative way. We also want to explore collaborations with other creative industries, such as architecture and interior design, to bring our vision of paper fashion to a broader audience.
We have developed our technique through years of practice and experimentation. Each garment we create is the result of hours of meticulous work, in which we cut, fold, and shape the paper with precision. We use various paper-working techniques, including origami, papier-mâché, and hand sewing, to create unique textures and details. Our experience in sustainable fashion has also taught us the importance of minimizing waste, using every single piece of paper efficiently.
The motivation that drives us to create art in the contemporary world is the desire to make a difference. We want our works to be an example of how art and fashion can be sustainable and innovative. Each of our garments is a message, a declaration of love for the planet and a commitment to a better future. We believe that fashion can be a powerful tool for raising awareness and inspiring change.
To young people approaching art, we want to say not to be afraid to experiment and to follow their passions. Art is a journey of personal discovery, and every mistake is an opportunity to learn and grow. Be curious, explore new techniques and materials, and remember that true beauty lies in authenticity and innovation. Sustainability is not just a passing trend, but a necessity for our future, and every small step towards a greener world is a valuable contribution.
MoreAngel continues to challenge the conventions of fashion, demonstrating that creativity and sustainability can go hand in hand. With our paper creations, we hope to inspire others to see the hidden potential in simple materials and to join us on this journey towards a greener and more beautiful future.
